What do you think about love?
What do you think about love? He asked Like a distant moon orbiting the outskirts of my dreams Frayed and cosmic at the edges. I dreamt, that night, of light and darkness and this is what I thought: Love is the sunlight resting on my fallen lashes. A graffiti painted train moving slowly through the yard. A calico cat stretching out before my feet. The sound of a friend laughing at my joke. Love is also the feel of his fingertips in my hair. Love is the way we move in tandem with gravity. Love is his breath on my face. The way we hold each other As if it were our last night on Earth And we fuck in a frenzy haze of subverted reality, Starlight showering over us, Seeping into his curls, Dark as the night, Deep as his mouth. It comes in waves Infesting every vein And pulsating Slowly In every fingertip In every unswept corner Where the dust of your words crumbled into shadows Smelling of flower vase water Green with forget Fragile like the streaking lights from 4am streets Creeping into rooms and tumbling over eyes After a dream. It drifts into every silent moment Heavy with monochromatic resilience Smooth and impenetrable; Pebbles in the back of your mind Rattling with every step forward. What will you do? It ricochets around the room, every room, in every country, in every language What will you do? How can you plan when the whole ground is quicksand, I reply How can you imagine Places, people, lovers, family When all I have is my name And the years of being alive Stacking up Higher and higher Like a cruel Jenga pile Take one out and you’re done for What will you do? What I can do What else can I do? To survive To live To pretend to have meaning And every day I breathe Is another day worn out Where does all the empty space go? Where do all the poems go When you’re gone And they’ve been read And everyone forgets Where does all the time go Down a drain Into a void Like poetry Like me. You were a parenthesis In this long and winding journey. An arrow in the night Burning a path through the sky Streaking through my veins Pretending to be fire. I followed the light Like a drunken firefly Hypnotised, addicted and induced Into thinking I had reached the Sun Across the hills
